The tags at Value Village are basically a secret sale code. The tags are colour coded to reflect when an item came in and each week a different coloured tag is on sale. Usually, it is announced over the loudspeaker what colour tag is on sale, but the employees are happy to tell you as well.

Value Village in Canada, which operates under its US parent company Savers Value Village Inc., is wholly owned by Ares Management Corporation. It remains an independent entity within the retail landscape, with no ownership ties to Walmart.

Goodwill color codes its price tags for 50% discounts. The “Weekly Discount” color switches every seven days, so it's important that you pay attention while shopping. Blue, yellow, purple, green, red and orange are all common colors you may find on different items throughout the store.

The icon that looks like a bucket of water instructs how to wash a garment, the square with a circle in the center instructs how to dry it, and the iron symbol instructs how to iron it. The remaining laundry tag symbols refer to bleaching (triangle), dry-cleaning (circle), and non-machine drying (square) instructions.

As I have explained in a previous post, Savers utilizes color tags to designate which week merchandise hit the sales floor. Each week, the 50%-off color tag rotates to the color tag that has been on the sales floor the longest. There are a few ways to find out which color tag is currently 50%-off.

So often times in thrift stores, in order to keep their product fresh and make sure they know how long a product has been on the shelf, they'll do color rotation. So this week or this month, or any time period you want to, we're going to tag all the products in yellow. Next week we're going to tag in pink.

Shoppers have also recently called out the pricing practices of Goodwill and Salvation Army, which are non-profit organizations. Value Village is a for-profit business owned by parent company Savers Value Village.
