14-year-old Cherry and her dad move to the other end of the country to live with his new girlfriend and her four daughters. Welcomed into their creative, confident family, Cherry begins to understand herself and her past, and that her habit of embroidering the truth does nothing but harm in the end.

The story concludes with Shay and Cherry traveling by canoe after Cherry is slapped by Honey and her lies as the canoe breaks down. They end up spending the night together in a cave and are found in the morning. Shay's dad finally realizes his son's value and decides not to be hard on him.
